Musical Stained Glass Kits

Here are a series of stained glass music box projects which are fun to build and fun to give as gifts.

After you have finished building any one of them, they are fun to admire. Call in a friend, close the curtains, turn down the lights, pop some corn and have a sing-along. Have some fun!

Each Music Box Package contains all of the material that you will need to build any of these exciting projects: glass sheets, patterns, instructions, and any special effects (such as bells, wires, tubes, keyboards, wheels, turntables and other assorted paraphernalia). You will need to provide your own foil and solder, as well as possess the necessary tools for basic stained glass work.

This Whittemore-Durgin stained glass music box kit consists of a pattern, instructions, a music box movement, a turntable, mirror, and plenty of glass for you to complete the project. Copper foil and solder are not included. Also, for this project you will need a not-so-strong flux that is safe to use with mirrors, and some Super-Glue type of glue.

Our little soldier, who goes by the name Trevor, stand perpetually at attention, even while his mirrored platform rotates slowly to the tune of "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers". The melody, while not originally a Christmas song, has come to be associated with the holiday, as it tells a charming story of little wooden soldiers in the toy shop coming to life at the stroke of midnight.

We have two versions of the music box movement: the regular one (listen to it here), and a "tick-tock" version that emits a slight ticking sound in time with the music (listen to it here). We will by default include the regular one, but if you put "tick tock" in the Comment field when placing your order, we will instead include the "tick-tock" version.

In this stained glass kit, this happy little group is about to attack an enormous picnic lunch down there in the woods someplace. The 6" diameter red and white checkered table cloth is spread. They are just waiting for a signal from you to activate the music box movement which causes their little microcosm to rotate sedately in a counter-clockwise direction, to the tune of "Teddy Bear's Picnic", of course.

Theodore (Teddy) and Roxanne got to know each other during a series of encounter group meetings in Santa Barbara. Theodore is a loving, caring person and had been looking for a lasting, meaningful relationship. Roxanne soon gave up her promising career as a guide at a theme park nearby (Knotts Berry Farm) and they got married. They are a close-knit, happy little family, but their son, Charlie, is a little pest.

This stained glass kit portrays 3-inch wide butterflies hovering around the center of a fragrant, six-petalled flower, which is as yet unclassified in any reference work covering the flora of North America. As the butterflies busily engage in their hovering activities, the music box causes the flower to rotate and carry them along, to the tune of "English Country Garden."

One can just imagine the three butterflies, whose names are Patti, LaVerne and Maxine (although one cannot imagine a caterpillar named Maxine), singing in close harmony full of augmented 7ths, diminished 9ths and stuff like that, while they gently rock to and fro in the manner of an animated Walt Disney short subject.

One must suppose that butterflies such as these will live forever, and not fall prey to some of the unfortunate habits for which butterflies are noted.

In this stained glass kit, this rotating flock of fantastic insects from the order Lepidoptera have shimmering, diaphanous, iridescent wings, and bring to mind the lines from Coleridge, ..."meandering with a mazy motion..." as they lazily revolve while the music box inside the mobile apparatus plays "Für Elise."

The bodies of these creatures are oval glass jewels, and no two sets of wings are alike, so they are actually four separate sub-species of the order. Each is suspended by nylon thread from the end of a brass tube, which are driven into a circular motion by the turning of the mobile device pictured. The device is powered by a spring, which is key wound.

Our circus parade is temporarily halted because, Jeffrey, the elephant who provides the motive power for this lovely little menage, has absented himself for a few moments to take care of a pressing personal problem. His niece, Mildred, is in one of the cages, averting her eyes. (She has the cutest pink ears!)

The entire scene in this kit is mounted upon a turntable, powered by a music box movement that plays "Talk to the Animals," as the turntable rotates.

In this stained glass project, the Red Baron and two of his cohorts cruise endlessly above the billowing cloud which rotates as a music box plays the ephemeral "Clair de Lune." The fuselages of the craft are 3/4" x 3" cast jewels and the wings are made from various colors of cathedral or opal glass.

Our version of "The 'A' Train" is called "The 'B' Train" because it does not carry passengers, unless you don't mind riding in a box car. It doesn't exactly speed along like the Chattanooga Choo Choo either. It sort of ambles. This little scene slowly rotates on a turntable which is operated by a music box movement that plays "I've Been Working on the Railroad." The wheels are faceted glass jewels.

This simple stained glass project has a couple of unique features which your ordinary, basic, run-of-the-mill stained glass church is usually lacking. In its belfry, which is otherwise fairly normal, it has a real bell just like the one in a full size church, except to scale, of course. You will have to supply your own bats and pigeons, however.

The other feature is that this church has a music box movement installed inside that plays "Amazing Grace."

This 5-1/2" high stained glass piano displays the working parts through the front. The complete package includes the keyboard.

Mrs. Grace Amazing, of Pensecola, Rhode Island writes to say: "My husband, Billy Joe, made a piano and altered the musical movement to play 'The Entertainer' backwards. He presented it to me upon the occasion of my winning second honorable mention certificate in the Bristol County Baked Quahog Recipe Contest."

This project can be lots of fun because we have designed the concert grand to accommodate not just one, but two music boxes side by side. You can choose any two tunes from the list of music boxes (on this page), and have a music box piano with an expanded repertoire. Who knows? By judicious experimentation you may discover two tunes, which, when played simultaneously, are in harmony. You will then, when finished, be the proud owner of a Contrapuntal Concert Grand Piano - a veritable treasure amongst music boxes.

Just put your two selections in the Comment field when you are checking out. If you do not specify your preferences, we will include Fur Elise and Beethoven's 5th Symphony.

In a brave attempt at self-betterment, Roxanne, the beautiful ballet dancer, has just escaped from the local repertory dance theatre version of "Swan Lake," after the the boorish director screamed at her one too many times. She now pirouettes slowly on our mirrored stage in this stained glass kit, dreaming of being the Dying Swan while the music box plays "Swan Lake".

We used mirror glass for the box and the platform, and as the box and platform rotate on a turntable, any light sources are reflected repeatedly, and interesting reflections are produced.

Our dragon is more properly called a Dragonet, or Dragon, Junior Size. This is a breed which has been developed for its small size, amiable disposition, and ability to lay eggs in 9 colors and three sizes. (They look remarkably like our glass nuggets.)

Being bashful, or you might say reluctant, this friendly beast is an ideal pet for apartment dwellers, or folks who live in their automobiles, because she takes up very little space.

Her name is Jessica Dragonet, and she seems to thrive on a meager diet of cobwebs, lint and similar detritus. As she sits on a 5-1/4" diameter mirror base, surrounded by her eggs, the whole scene rotates sedately on the music box.

We wish we could offer "Puff the Magic Dragon" for the musical movement; but, due to copyright troubles, we can only offer "Just the Way You Are." We feel this melody reflects the fact that, despite not conforming to societal pressures to be soft and svelte, Jessica has strong sense of inner beauty, and knows that she, like all of us, is worthy of love. If any other music box melody from our collection makes more sense to you, please feel free to suggest it.

Please make your musical preference known in the Comment field when you are checking out.

Be the first kid on your block to own a stained glass privy! This realistic replica of "The Necessary" of a bygone era is a "One Holer", being intended for occupancy by no more than one person at a time. once this kit is completed, artfully concealed therein will be a music box, situated beneath the seat, which plays "Dixieland". The vertical siding is made from amber opal glass, which is an excellent way to depict the grain of unpainted wood. The door swings open and the only thing missing from the inside is a Sears Roebuck catalog.

The privy is a novel gift idea. You will have lots of fun composing a suitable gift card to accompany this memorable memento for that Certain Special Someone.

We are indebted for this adept adaptation of a memorable photograph to Nancy Grant and Spectrum Glass Company, holders of the copyright for the stained glass pattern. Nancy and the Spectrum folk chose the colors, and they seem to be exactly what is called for. We added the mirrored platform and the music box, so that when the apparatus is set in motion, Marilyn rotates slowly while the music box plays "The Way We Were" What a pleasant thought.

In Greek Mythology, Calliope was the Muse of eloquence and epic poetry. (The word means, literally, "the beautiful voiced".) The steam operated calliope was invented in Worcester, Mass. in 1855. In its heyday it was mainly used on steamboats to entertain the passengers, and to attract crowds to the landing places as the boat approached. A mature calliope in full voice could be heard from 5 miles away, and was sure to arouse the countryside.

The power came directly from the main boiler of the steamboat, and was delivered to the 32 pipes through a manifold. The keyboard artist had to be an extremely sturdy individual, because the keyboard consisted of heavy brass keys which required great pressure to depress. When the keys were operated, the steam from the manifold was permitted to enter the particular pipe through its sounding vent, and into the atmosphere in close proximity to the operator. By the time the musical interlude was completed, the operator was parboiled, and usually staggered somewhere in search of cooling liquids.

Calliopes soon found their way onto circus wagons, and into carrousels, but were operated by compressed air delivered similar to the way that pump organs operated. It does seem safer. Our calliope has a boiler. And pipes. And even four bells (a matched set) on the roof. It has a mirrored keyboard and stands about 6 inches tall. It is gorgeously apparelled in red, white and blue iridized opalescent glass and tastefully decorated with all manner of brass trimming which we tinned to a silver color. Our version is outfitted with a music box that plays "Over the Waves".

This rather grandiose project is a scaled-down version of one of the four antiphonal organs at the Cathedral of Freiburg upon which E. Power Biggs played four of the great Toccatas and Fugues by Johann Sebastian Bach when he was alive. (Biggs, that is.) Lacking access to any of the Bach stuff, we have equipped this one to play Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.

Looking at the finished product, we cannot help but visualize how it must have been two and one-half centuries ago as J.S. Bach sat at a large organ that might have looked something like this one, messing around trying to write The Passion of St. Matthew. One wonders if he would have objected to the pressure sensitive stick-on keyboards.

The risers to the keyboards and the interior side panels are mirrors, so that if you position your eyeball properly you can see as many as 16 keyboards. The area behind the rank of pipes is also mirrored. The music box movement is behind a piece of clear glass, flanked by two pieces of mirror set at an angle. They reflect the two sides of the movement so that you can see three views of it at one time.

This portable version of the Victorian Victrola #7481 shares some of its features but has some special features of its own. Our pattern and instructions suggest that you build this little gem from light amber opal glass to give it an oak-like appearance. The brass grillwork and other brass parts complement this golden oak color well. Our portable Victrola is only 2-1/2" high. We have chosen to equip it with a music box which plays "Let Me Call You Sweetheart".

If you close your eyes and let your imagination come into play, you might visualize Paul Whiteman's orchestra, resplendent in their white tuxedos up there on the stage, giving their inimitable rendition of this tune.

When this stained glass kit is complete, not only will it light up, it will also play "The Tennessee Waltz" on a music box movement which you can see peeking through the front opening. The tiny light bulb is just enough to illuminate all of the innards, so that when you set all of this high-tech stuff into motion, you can conjure up some of your misspent youth in an imaginary secluded rendezvous.

The color selection of the glass in our example is based upon those colors of a Wurlitzer which was illustrated in an antique magazine we found recently. Red and green, orange and blue all combine to make a striking rendition of the juke box art form. The bulbous jewels add an aura of voluptuous decadence that is sure to turn you on. The cord, the bulb and the jewels are included, with the pattern and instructions, of course.

What's a girl to do when she's all alone in an enormous puddle, with the rain coming down and the water rising? Why, she'll rotate, of course, on the music box turntable and sing, "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my Head." She can be sure that help will not be long in coming.

In this stained glass kit, our little girl's name is Beatrix. Her brother's name is Hans. Her brother is the little Dutch boy who puts his finger in the dike. When he isn't doing that, he is out skating on his silver skates. They call him "Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates". But when he puts his finger in the dike, he is just a little Dutch boy. And he doesn't belong in this story.

Beatrix likes the color yellow so she chose to outfit herself in yellow, including hat, coat and umbrella. Her boots are opaque black, and her face and hands are pale flesh colored (or you may request a darker shade), except when she goes down to help out Hans, at which times she turns a funny shade of blue. The box is yellow.

This delightful stained glass project features genuine solid brass gondolas. The rest of the project utilizes items you supply yourself -- non-glass items one might expect to find around the house, attic or garage -- which makes this a frugal undertaking sure to please the fiscally conservative craftsperson.

Putting them all together, we have a small clutch of hot air balloons which float lazily aloft while a music box plays "Around the World in 80 Days". The entire scene rotates, while down below we see a map which, in our own version, includes our own home town of Rockland, Mass.

We cut the map from a pre-Interstate road map which had been used in our office since 1967. It was probably due for replacement. The balloons themselves are retired Christmas tree ornaments, set aside several years ago because of a severe cutback in our entertainment budget.

The record on our Victorian Victrola stained glass kit doesn't rotate, but on the other hand, it will never wear out. The solid brass horn and the brass plated tone arm contrast vividly with the mahogany colored case and black record. This 4-1/2" high project was patterned after one of the early models of the first talking machine which came onto the market shortly after the cylinder types. Our machine is equipped with a music box movement that plays "Danny Boy".

One can imagine the great Irish tenor John McCormack, clearing his throat, getting ready to join in at any moment.

The musical staff that surrounds the cradle on this stained glass project is divided into four measures. The musical notes which are attached to the staff are the music for the first four bars of "Rockabye Baby".

A slight shove will start the cradle rocking, and it will continue for quite some time. Before it stops, little Walter (that's his name, Walter Murphy) will either be fast asleep or too dizzy to make much of a fuss. The little nursery also rotates slowly, powered by a music box movement that plays "Rockabye Baby". By the time little Walter has finished rocking and rotating he will certainly cause you no further trouble. Little Walter is from a fine old local family. His Uncle Vladimir plays one of our player pianos.

Our most popular music box project to date has been the #0430 Stained Glass Music Box Church. You have made hundreds of these churches as gifts, of course, but many of them have been used with great success as fund-raising projects for local churches.

Here is a rather grandiose project for those with Higher Aspirations. Our stained glass cathedral is 10 inches long and 10 inches high, and will accommodate two music boxes. It is equipped with many brass decorative features, including ornate angles, galleries and beaded chain. As you can see from the illustration, the total appearance is that of a brooding, somber pile. The glass we used is a dark gray opal. The roofs are clad with copper foil. All of the metal work is darkened chemically, so that the medieval appearance is accentuated.

We installed bells in the belfry, although as with the #0430 church you will have to supply your own bats and pigeons (to scale). We include the music box movements #2246 Great is Thy Faithfulness and #7435 Oh Come All Ye Faithful.

This was not originally a music box project, but it had an Extreme Makeover recently and ended up as one. Appropriately, it plays "Jingle Bells," which, incidentally, was written about the sleigh rides that ran through Medford Square in Medford, Mass., as was "Over the River and Through the Woods." But we digress.

Dobbins, the official horse who has been assigned to this project is on sabbatical leave, attending an Arabian horse seminar in Kuwait entitled "The Primal Whinny". We tried to find another plug with experience in One-Horse Open Sleighing, but the agency sent us a long parade of oat-burners which were a short step ahead of the glue factory, so we finally threw in the sponge. You will have to imagine a stained glass horse in this scene.

This music box project is a simple one as far as the glass part of it goes, but the wire work can be a litle complicated. The assorted packages you see in the photograph are our version of what might look appropriate. They are not included in the plans or the package of material. They are a great way to use up all of those little scraps of Christmas wrapping paper that you hate to throw out, but for which you can never find a use.

Perched atop a rotating music box, our 2-1/2" high musicians are capable of belting out your choice of several different Christmas carols (found here). You can decide which one, or better yet, build a dozen different ones. (Yes, that's much better.) Just let us know which music box you'd like using the Comment field when checking out. If you do not select a tune, we'll select a nice one on your behalf.

You can customize these little people by using Whittemore-Durgin sticky heads, or leave them incognito. The choice is yours.

This kit includes glass for the cloud, the box, the wings, as well as the heads and hands of the angels. You supply the scrap glass for the gowns of the angels, or may choose to use leftover white opal from the glass provided, if you wish.
